CHAPTER TEN
SUSAN
Red and blues lit the night, creating a scene that might have been beautiful if the flashing didn't engender apprehension deep within me. After parking haphazardly, I bolted to the scene, running through an alley and someone's yard to get there, cursing the roadblocks as I ran.
I slipped through two bushes and almost right into the enclave of people clustered around a body on the ground. My stomach dropped. Was anything broken? Was she still even alive? Did I really want to know the answer?
No one had seen me yet. I could still leave. Everyone thought I was courageous in the way I had stood by Paul, but they didn't really know me. It wasn't courage that kept me there, it was numbness. It was duty. It was resignation. Truthfully, I was a coward. It was harder to leave then it was to stay. Now, I wasn't so sure which would be harder.
Don't be ridiculous. Go to her.
"Susan." A big burly man poked his head through a hole in the enclave. The two police officers twisted away from one another to look at me.
The whole scene grew clear for the first time. Two officers, the burly man on the ground, Julia's legs lax behind him. Julia on the ground. Julia not moving.
"Where's the ambulance?" I asked.
"On its way," said one of the officers. "Are you her family?"
"Yes." I closed the short distance to the small group of people. As I did, Julia's face flashed into view over the burly man's shoulder. Her eyes were closed, her chin tipped to the side. She looked so young. So helpless.
I blinked. "Why are you all just standing there? Can't you see she's hurt? She must—she must be uncomfortable on the ground."
"Don't touch her," one of the officers said. "Jim, why don't you take this woman..."
"I'm not going anywhere." I shoved the officer's hand off my shoulder and backed away, arcing around them all so I could get closer to Julia. "Get away from me."
"Calm down, ma'am," the officer said.
"Shut up," I snapped.
The officer put his hands on his belt. "Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave if you can't calm down."
"And I'm going to go berserk if you don't shut up. Why don't you two do your jobs and track down the monster who did this?"
The three men turned to stare at me like I was a tiger who may attack with no provocation. Rusty stood, placing his palms together in a prayer position. "Susan, they're just trying to help."
"How do you know who I am?" I shot back at him.
"I could just tell by the way you looked at her that you love her," he said, his voice low and even.
The juxtaposition of my hysterics and his calm made me realize how ridiculous I looked. I wrapped my hands around my elbows and tried to take a breath. My whole body trembled. "Is she awake?"
"No." Rusty took a step forward. "But she's breathing. And alive."
"Where's that damn ambulance?"
"It's coming," he said.
